I Don’t Need Anything. That Was My First Mistake. | Kandidly Kay
I don’t need anything.
I say this often. Confidently. Like someone who has reached a new level of self control.
“I’m not buying anything this month.”
“I’ve got everything I need.”
“I’m being sensible.”
You almost believe yourself.
For a moment, you are that person.
Organised. Grounded. Financially responsible.
And then…
“I’ll just have a quick look.”
That’s it.
That’s the turning point.
Because “just looking” is never just looking.
It’s a process. A journey. A slow, steady slide into a decision you absolutely did not plan to make.
You open one tab. Then another.
Then suddenly you’re comparing options like this is a serious investment.
Add to basket.
Remove from basket.
Add again, because actually it was a good option.
Then there’s the classic move.
Remove one item to feel responsible.
Add two more things to reward yourself for your discipline.
Balance.
At this point, it’s no longer shopping.
It’s reasoning.
“This would be nice for summer.”
“I’ve been meaning to get something like this.”
“I actually don’t have anything like this.”
You probably do.
But that’s not the point.
Because this version of you, the one currently making decisions, has a vision.
She has plans.
She has places to be.
Places that may or may not exist.
And then we enter dangerous territory.
The sale.
Because now it’s not spending.
It’s strategy.
“I’d be losing money if I didn’t buy this.”
Which, when you say it out loud, makes absolutely no sense.
And yet internally…
flawless logic.
At some point, the decision is made.
Checkout.
No hesitation.
There’s a very specific calm that comes with clicking “place order”.
A quiet confidence.
“That was a good decision.”
Until the confirmation email lands.
And you see the total.
And there’s a pause.
Not full regret.
Just a moment of stillness.
Followed by:
“Well… it’s done now.”
And we move.
Then, a few days later…
The parcels arrive.
And this is where it gets interesting.
Because the version of you who made all those confident decisions has gone.
Completely.
Now it’s just you.
Opening boxes.
Trying to reconnect with the mindset that led you here.
“Did I order this?”
Yes.
Yes you did.
And in that moment, you remember.
Oh yes.
That was part of the new me plan.
You’ll wear one thing immediately.
Feel great.
Validate the entire purchase.
Another thing will sit there for a bit.
You’ll save it.
And one item will remain untouched.
Still in its packaging.
Still with tags.
Still holding potential.
Waiting for a version of your life that felt very real for about seven minutes on a Tuesday evening.
And somehow…
we do it again.
Next month.
Same confidence.
Same speech.
“I don’t need anything.”
Be honest…
What’s the last thing you bought that you absolutely did not need?
