The Phone Call That Changed Everything

One phone call on a train platform changed the way I think about listening, connection and the importance of being heard.

My journey with Samaritans began in a way I never expected.

After recovering from a very serious illness, I found myself standing on a crowded train platform feeling overwhelmed by anxiety that had quietly crept into my life.

In the middle of all that noise, I noticed a small green sign with the words Talk to us and the Samaritans number.

In that moment, I decided to call.

A volunteer answered and listened to me for nearly an hour.

There was no judgment. No pressure to explain myself perfectly. Just calm, steady listening.

That conversation changed something for me.

The situation had not disappeared, but the feeling of facing it alone had.

Not long afterwards I applied to become a Samaritan myself.

The training was thorough and the responsibility is one I take seriously. It reinforced something simple but powerful.

Being heard matters.

Kandidly Kay is where I explore that idea further through reflections, stories and observations about life, relationships and the importance of truly listening to one another.

Kay
